Blur a license plate before sharing the photo
A car photo can reveal more than the vehicle itself. A readable license plate can connect an image to a person, trip, address, or work site. PrivaCanvas lets you cover a plate directly in your browser before you post, send, or attach the photo. The source image stays on your device; the download is a new PNG.
PrivaCanvas currently detects faces, not license plates. For a plate, draw the mask yourself and inspect the finished download. That manual review matters for small, angled, reflective, or partly obscured plates.
How to blur a license plate online
- Open the local image redaction tool and choose a JPG, PNG, or WebP photo.
- Drag a rectangle over the entire license plate, including a little padding around its edges.
- Choose Blackout for the strongest visual cover. Pixelate is useful when you need the image to keep a censored look; Blur is the gentlest option and is not the best choice for an identifier.
- Zoom in and check the mask does not leave characters visible at an edge.
- Download the new PNG, then open that exported file once before sharing it.
The original photo is unchanged. Share the downloaded copy, not the source file.
Which mask should you choose?

Before you publish the image
License plates are not the only detail worth checking. Look for faces, house numbers, street signs, building entrances, dashboards, paperwork, and reflections in windows or mirrors. You can use Detect faces for a local first pass, then add manual masks for everything else.
The exported PNG is flattened: its masks are rendered into the file instead of remaining movable layers. It also does not carry over the original photo's EXIF metadata. This does not guarantee anonymity; it is still your responsibility to review the final image and decide whether it is safe to share.
Questions
Does PrivaCanvas automatically find license plates?
Not at present. Face detection is available locally, but license plates require a manual mask. This page describes the actual current workflow rather than promising automatic plate recognition.
Is my car photo uploaded to a server?
No. Selecting, masking, and exporting the image happen in your browser. Normal site assets load when you visit the page, but PrivaCanvas has no image-upload endpoint for the editor.
Can I change the mask after I draw it?
Yes. Select a mask to move or resize it. You can also switch between blur, pixelation, and blackout; existing masks update to the newly selected method.
Does this remove GPS or camera metadata?
The download is a newly rendered PNG, so it does not copy EXIF metadata from the source photo. See remove photo metadata before sharing for the distinction between visible information and file metadata.
